How do you care for and heal a tattoo?

Proper tattoo aftercare has a significant impact on the tattoo's appearance and the healing process. Even the best-executed tattoo requires appropriate care during the first few weeks following the procedure. Following the tattoo artist's recommendations reduces the risk of infection, accelerates skin regeneration, and helps preserve color vibrancy and the sharpness of details.

What to prepare

Before starting your skincare routine, it is worth getting:

  • gentle soap without strong fragrances and irritating substances (e.g. Biały Jeleń or a gentle intimate hygiene gel),
  • paper towels for drying the tattoo,
  • tattoo care cream, e.g., Easy Tattoo or Bepanthen Ointment.

The first few hours after getting a tattoo

Immediately after the procedure, the skin may be red, slightly swollen, and sensitive to the touch. This is a completely natural bodily reaction.

The tattoo is covered with a protective film like Second Skin, which protects the fresh wound from dirt and bacteria.

Plasma, a small amount of blood, and excess ink may accumulate under the film. This can make the tattoo appear smudged, but it is a normal occurrence. Once the film is removed and the tattoo is washed, it will look just as it did immediately after being done.

How long should I wear the Second Skin film?

The film should be left on the tattoo for a maximum of up to 3 days, unless the tattoo artist advises otherwise.

At that time:

  • do not remove the foil unnecessarily,
  • avoid getting it wet,
  • Do not puncture or peel off the corners.

If severe discomfort, burning, or intense itching occurs, or if the film starts to peel off, it should be removed earlier.

How do I remove the film?

After maximum 3 days:

  1. Pour a large amount of lukewarm water over the foil.
  2. Gently peel it off the skin.
  3. Wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and mild soap.
  4. Pat the skin dry with a disposable paper towel—do not rub.

How do you wash and moisturize a tattoo?

After removing the film, you should regularly wash and moisturize the tattoo.

First 7 days

  • wash tattoo every 4 hours,
  • Apply a thin layer of cream after every wash.

Next 7 days

  • Wash and moisturize the tattoo approximately every 5 hours.

The tattoo should be lightly moisturized but not covered with a thick layer of cream. The skin needs to be able to breathe freely.

How does the tattoo healing process work?

After about 2–4 days, the tattoo begins to peel. This is a natural stage of healing.

At that time:

  • do not remove flaking skin,
  • do not scratch itchy skin,
  • kontynuuj regularne mycie i nawilżanie.

Complete healing of the skin usually takes about 4-6 weeksDuring this time, the tattoo may appear less intense than it did immediately after being done. This is a natural process associated with the regeneration of the epidermis.

What should you avoid while a tattoo is healing?

During the healing period, avoid:

  • long baths,
  • swimming pools, Jacuzzis, and swimming in lakes and the sea,
  • saunas and solariums,
  • intensive tanning and exposing the tattoo to UV radiation,
  • scratching and picking at peeling skin,
  • touching the tattoo with dirty hands,
  • wearing very tight clothing that rubs against a fresh tattoo,
  • consuming alcohol or other substances on the day the tattoo is performed.

When should you contact a tattoo artist?

Contact us if you notice:

  • increasing pain instead of gradual improvement,
  • intense redness spreading beyond the tattoo,
  • purulent discharge,
  • fever or other worrying symptoms,
  • an allergic reaction.

If you have any doubts, it is always worth consulting your tattoo artist. It is better to ask too soon than too late.
